We have various offsite trips during the academic year which are at additional cost, for example a trip to beauty trade exhibition in London and spa industry based visits.
Our beauty department takes part in the annual World Skills Awards for Beauty where the skills and determination of students are tested via a practical skill-based competition nationally and, if successful, internationally. There is also an opportunity to take part in SEBTA a national competition for facial electrotherapy. Sterex also runs an annual national epilation competition to a find a ‘student of the year’.
You will need to have successfully completed Beauty Therapy Level 2.
Your entry level will be assessed based on previous experience, initial aptitude test results and from discussing your goals and aspirations. You will need a reference from your tutor or employer and should take pride in your appearance, enjoy communicating with people, have enthusiasm, dedication and a mature attitude.
Your personal tutor will discuss your progress with you at regular tutorials. Practical assessments will be observed by an assessor and you will be expected to build a professional portfolio of evidence consisting of written assignments and work packs. Most units will require exams to be completed.
You may wish to progress into employment within the beauty industry in salons, spas, the retail industry or wedding services. Alternatively you may seek further advanced training to specialise in make up techniques (television, theatre, photographic), sports therapy, reflexology, remedial massage techniques or aromatherapy.
Ex-students have gone in various directions; the beauty industry as a career path is very diverse. We have a make-up artist working for the BBC, salon owners, salon chain owners, mobile therapists, cruise ship therapists, lecturers, people working in spas abroad and the list goes on.
