In July 2020, the Department for Education published the government’s response to the higher technical education consultation and our higher technical education reforms.
A high-quality system of higher technical education is being developed where learners and employers can have confidence in high-quality courses that provide the skills they need to succeed. Higher technical education is a high-quality and prestigious choice, which learners could consider alongside other routes such as apprenticeships or degrees.
Higher Technical Qualifications are Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications (such as HNDs/Foundation Degrees/Diploma HE) that have been approved as meeting occupational standards for the relevant sector. These qualifications have been developed by awarding bodies in collaboration with employers and businesses so that students get the specific training, knowledge and skills required for their chosen career.
East Coast College is offering HTQs from September 2023 in:
Routes will be available in areas such as Construction Design and Build Technician, Construction Quantity Surveying Technician, Network Engineering or Software Development. Further details of these will be added as the programmes are developed.
These courses will require a sufficient standard of maths and English to cope with the demands of the course. Applications will be taken through the Universities and Colleges Application System (UCAS) and you will also be invited to attend an informal interview to assess your suitability for the course.
These courses will give you the skills and qualifications needed to progress into relevant sector employment. Alternatively, you can progress to further higher-level study including a full degree programme or degree apprenticeship.
