This course will provide you with the skills you need to work as a painter and decorator in the construction sector. Your learning will be a mixture of practical and theory and in practical lessons you will work through a series of tasks and projects to develop your hands-on skills, set by the awarding body.

Following your initial assessment, an individual learning plan is created which will highlight your strengths and details any areas of need.

The course is broken down into units focusing on specific areas which are then assessed. This will allow us to check your progress before the next module begins. Don’t worry! Each unit is carefully programmed, and delivered to ensure you receive training appropriate for you.

Areas covered include:

  • Safe working practices/communication/building methods and construction technology
  • Prepare surfaces for decoration 2
  • Apply paint systems by brush and roller 2
  • Apply standard papers to walls and ceilings
  • Produce specialist decorative finishes 2
  • Creating and applying colour
  • Erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms 2

This course also includes visits, guest speakers, training opportunities and work experience. We take part in various competitions, including the annual Norfolk and Waveney Building Apprentices’ competition, to showcase the skills and determination of our students.

You will need to have achieved at least a grade 3 in English and a grade 2 in maths. You will also need to attend an interview before you are accepted on to the course.

Your entry level will be assessed based on any previous experience you may have, initial aptitude test results and from discussing your goals and aspirations. No matter what level you start at, each course prepares you for the next, to allow you to progress and maximise your potential.

All practical assignments will be assessed in the workshops

You can progress on to Painting and Decorating Level 3.

After completing this course you may choose to progress to another programme to develop your knowledge of the industry further or find work within the industry. Former students have gone on to work within the industry or have even set up their own businesses. Many are now helping to train the workforce of the future as they have also taken on apprentices of their own.
