Functional English is based around real-life situations that you might encounter day-to-day or at work. Achieving in Functional English is a great qualification to put on your CV and it helps you work up to your C-grade/Level 4 in GCSE English.
There are three elements in every level:
Reading
- Finding information in a text
- Being able to identify bias/opinion
- Identifying language features
Writing
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Writing a complete text (email, letter, leaflet)
- Being able to respond to a brief
Speaking and Listening
- Discussions and presentations are also covered

Requirements
If you have previously achieved any grade below a D/Grade 3 in GCSE English, you may be eligible to complete Functional Skills English. The most appropriate level for you will be based on your initial assessment scores.
Assessment
The three components are assessed separately, so each can be attempted when you are ready.
You will have to pass all three elements to pass your qualification.
At Levels 1 and 2 you can take the Reading and Writing assessment either online or on paper. The Entry level assessments are on paper and there is a choice of topics.
Progression
You can move on to the next level which may be GCSE English. Achieving certain levels in Functional English will also help you to gain access to higher levels courses.
