Course: Sport and Physical Activity Level 3

Do you want to develop the knowledge and skills required to help people lead a healthier lifestyle through sport and physical activity? Are you considering a career in coaching, teaching, fitness instruction or other practical sporting roles? Our courses combine academic studies with developing your sport and exercise skills, including leadership, organisation and communication. You will study a variety of practical, theoretical and applied sport and fitness topics in our classroom, fitness suite and sports hall facilities.
Over the two years of this course you will leave with the equivalent to three A-levels, allowing you to progress onto university, apprenticeships or employment. You will study a wide range of interesting units, including:
• Exercise health and lifestyle
• Planning and leading sport activities
• Sports nutrition
• Fitness testing
• Fitness training and programming
• Instructing physical activity and exercise
• Sport injuries and massage
• Applied strength and conditioning
• Organising sports events
You will also be given access to a range of work experience opportunities in a variety of different sport, health and exercise roles, and are required to complete work experience as part of the course. Opportunities in the past have included work with local primary and secondary schools, in sports coaching and with local sports clubs, in the fitness and leisure industries, and with a range of health and wellbeing providers. Our work experience coordinator will help you to find opportunities that suit you and help you develop and prepare you for career.
Students on this course will also have the opportunity to complete additional qualifications as part of their study programme, including:
- Level 2 Gym Instructing
- Level 3 Personal Training
You will benefit from regular free access to our own onsite sports facilities, including our own fitness suite and sports hall, to help you to put knowledge into practice. There are also multiple chances to volunteer at local sporting events, and a series of masterclasses, trips and visits from guest speakers to help guide you towards your career in sport.
You will need to have achieved at least four GCSEs at grade 4 or above (including English and maths).
Assessment will be through the successful completion of a portfolio of evidence. Evidence will be generated through:
– Practical assessments
– Group assessments
– Written assessments
Completion of this course offers a variety of opportunities to progress your career. You could go on to study a range of courses at university, such as Sports Sciences, Sports Coaching, Sport and Exercise Development or Sports Journalism. You could also choose to progress onto the FdSc Sport, Health and Exercise at the University of Suffolk at East Coast College.
A range of work-based training opportunities, such as apprenticeships, would also be available to you. Our students have progressed on to courses at a higher level or found employment working in a variety of roles within the sports industry, including personal trainer, sports analyst, sports official, sports psychologist and physiotherapist.
