Full-time

Our bricklaying course covers a wide range of practical skills and theory knowledge for the trade, helping you to gain employment as a bricklayer within the construction industry.

In practical lessons, you will work through a series of tasks to develop your hands-on skills, all set by the awarding body to demonstrate and verify your techniques. You will also complete theory lessons to provide you with the underpinning knowledge of the construction industry needed to apply your skills on site.

Previous students also benefited from a special masterclass with developer Lovell, where they were given a tour of a building site and put their skills to the test laying bricks for a home.

Modules you will study include:

  • Safe working practices
  • Interpreting working drawings
  • Producing thin joint masonry structures and masonry cladding
  • Building solid walling, isolated and attached piers
  • Construction cavity walling
  • Principles of construction and information

Why study with us:

  • Former students have secured employment and apprenticeships with large national and local companies including Persimmon Homes and Lovell.
  • You will be taught by highly qualified and skilled tutors in our on-site bricklaying workshops.
  • During the course, you will also learn qualities such as character strengths, confidence, self-belief and ownership.

Requirements

You will ideally need to have achieved a grade 3 in English and maths.

These entry grades are set as a guide, however we encourage students who are interested in this course and unsure of the grades they will achieve to submit an application and come along for a discussion with the course lecturer to assess your suitability.

Assessment

You will be assessed in a number of ways including multiple choice question papers, online exams and practical assignments.

Progression

The college works in partnership with various companies such as Lovell, Persimmon Homes, S J Specialist Brickwork, Premier Brickwork and DS Watson Civil Engineering (Anglia) who can offer work experience and apprenticeships.

Many of our former students have secured employment as a bricklayer, site supervisor, ground worker, general site operative, scaffolder, estimator or stonemason.

"I started off as an apprentice and wish that I had been given the opportunities and experiences that bricklaying students at East Coast College have today. We work with the team at the college and the students to provide real practical advice and skills, and a chance to find out first hand from our team about what it is like to work in the construction industry, inviting them on site to gain that experience. With a skills shortage in our industry, we need to encourage every one of these students and show that a career in the construction industry is hugely rewarding, fast paced and challenging, and that is why our work with East Coast College is so vital. We have also worked with the college offering industry placements in a real work environment, as well as campaigns on encouraging more women into construction, and informing the students about our apprenticeship opportunities."
