Study Level

Level 2

Lowestoft Campus

1 Year

This courses are perfect for anyone who is interested in a career in TV and film make-up or wanting to progress in the industry and gain a higher accreditation and skill set.

You will cover many areas of make-up and character creation, including art techniques such as airbrushing, prosthetics, hair colouring and styling, bald caps, ageing, dry hairstyling, body paint techniques and much more. You will use vegan friendly products and support sustainability through the upcyling of costumes and wigs.

You will need to be creative, a great communicator, a team player, reliable and have an interest in current and historical fashions of hair and make-up.

It is important that you have a mature and professional attitude, as the hair and make-up profession is a highly demanding and disciplined one. In particular, you will be required to maintain high standards of professionalism.

Why study with us:

  • Benefit from trips to Brighton Film School for workshops on lighting effects.
  • Previous students have completed work experience placements in film and television, working as media makeup assistants on feature films as well as supporting Pleasurewood Hills with their Halloween events, Lowestoft Sixth Form performing arts productions and the Pleasure Beach Fairground Fright nights.
  • We work with internationally recognised makeup-artists, such as Samantha Helen, body art illusionst and owner of the brand Essentials, and Flamingo Amy Vintage Workshop.

You will need to have achieved at least three GCSEs at grade 3 or above.

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a level 1/2 qualification in beauty therapy and/or a successful skills test and interview. A GCSE grade 4 in English and maths would be beneficial. GCSE Art would be an advantage or a keen interest in creative applications.

There is continuous assessment of each unit. You present evidence of competence via practical assessments and production of a personal portfolio of evidence.

You can progress to study the Level 3 Media Makeup

You will find that there is no defined progression route. The freelance nature of the profession means that you may move between trainee make-up assistant, make-up artist, chief/key make-up artist and designer roles, depending on your experience and confidence within the sector.
