Course: Access to Maritime

Study Level

Level 3

Lowestoft Campus

One Year

Please note this course is open for applications for a September 2024 start only. We are not taking applications for this current year.

This course is perfect for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the Maritime industry, allowing you to progress onto higher education and work on ships around the world.

It is a full-time course with a timetable of delivery of 13hrs a week (inclusive of one-hour tutorial support per week). You will be expected to complete independent study of at least 10 hours a week additional to the timetabled sessions.

The units you will be studying are divided into two categories – ungraded and graded.

You will study the following ungraded units which carry 15 unit points:

  • HE Study Skills
  • Introduction to the Maritime Industry
  • Maritime Employment and History
  • Standard Marine Communication Phrases

You will study the following graded units which carry 45 unit points:

  • Operation and Maintenance Deck Equipment and Machinery
  • Numeracy and Mathematics for Seafarers
  • Control Vessel Operations and Pollution Prevention
  • Nautical Science and Ship Construction
  • Introduction to Seamanship
  • Assist with a Vessel’s Navigational Watch

A sufficient standard of maths and English language is needed to cope with the demands of the course. We strongly advise you to have a GCSE in English language and maths at grade 4/C or above as the majority of university providers will require this.

You will undertake a diagnostic assessment to assess these skills during the course interview or induction process.

You may be able to study for one GCSE in either English language or maths alongside this course. This will be discussed during the Access interview process.

Assessment includes coursework assignments (structured questions/ reports/ essays/presentation etc) and exams.

Learners who meet the required standard set by receiving institutions whether university or college will be offered a place in their chosen Level 4 course, subject to available places, interview and any required regulatory checks.

An Access to HE Diploma is a recognised qualification for entry onto a Foundation Degree in Maritime, HNC or HND Maritime courses in our own college and other maritime colleges across the UK.
