This qualification is designed for those who wish to develop an understanding of autism and how to support autistic individuals. It provides a comprehensive overview of autism, including its characteristics, diagnosis, and common misconceptions.

You will explore the importance of using a person-centred approach to support autistic individuals, incorporating their preferences, strengths, and needs. The course also covers relevant legislation and guidance, and the role of support networks.

The qualification delves into communication and social interaction differences in autistic individuals, and introduces strategies to support these areas effectively. Sensory processing, perception, and cognition are also examined, with emphasis on recognising and supporting sensory needs.

You will gain insight into behaviour within the context of autism and learn how to support positive behaviour and develop coping strategies. The course also addresses how to support autistic individuals to live healthy and fulfilled lives, including transitions, personal safety, and access to services.

If you fall under the below categories, you are able to be fully funded for the course:

  • Low income – Earning under £25,750 annually before tax. (£2,083.30 monthly / £495.19 weekly)
  • UC – On universal credit and taking home £952 (single) or £1534 (joint)
  • Unemployed and seeking employment.
  • Receiving ESA/JSA

Requirements

There are no specific learning requirements. You will require appropriate level of literacy and willingness to complete the assessment criteria.

Assessment

This is a knowledge-only qualification assessed through a portfolio of evidence, covering 6 units of work that is to be completed in your own time and requires some further reading.

Progression

This qualification supports progression to employment in healthcare, social care, education, and other sectors. It also enables you to advance to Level 3 qualifications. You may progress to further study or employment in roles where an understanding of autism is essential.
