The Additional Learning Support team assess the support needs of individual students to ensure a personal package of support that meets the needs of the individual.

Please contact Study Support on 01502 525196/525069.

How will we support you?

If you have a statement, LDA or Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) and are thinking of coming to ECCC we may already know about your support needs. You might have already met Pam Birt, or another member of the team, and started to talk about how we can support you.

When you fill in the application form there is a question asking if you have support at school.  If you do and you tick this box we will make sure there is someone at your interview who can talk to you about how you like to be supported.

We have support for learners in class both in a group and one to one basis. This support can be discreet if you do not want it to be obvious that you are receiving help or it can take place out of class either in a group or one to one with a member of the learning support team.

Some learners need support outside of the classroom as well and we can provide this for example at breaks and lunch times, to help you find your taxi or get onto your bus and we have quiet areas that some people prefer.

We can provide support with personal care should learners need this.

The College

Foundation Skills is located in the centre of college at both campuses with easy access to all areas.  Foundation Skills staff have a staff room within the area so there is always help around.

Skills for Life Co-Educators are based in the Learning Street (Great Yarmouth campus) or in the Advice Centre (Lowestoft Campus).

We are friendly, supportive and committed to your achievement.  There are regular open days but if you would like to come and meet some of our learners you are welcome to come and visit us any time – just call 0800 854 695 to arrange your visit.

The facilities at the college are excellent and you will be encouraged to use all of them.

Support Meetings

We aim to identify and plan for individual students’ needs ready for when they begin studying at ECC.  To do this there will be one or a series of meetings to plan the support you will need when you come to college.

These may include visits to see you in school, meetings with your parents/carers and any professionals involved with meeting your individual needs, EHCP planning meetings and support planning that can including any specialist equipment or services.

Transition to College/Joining Us

It can be scary moving on to college so we like to get to know all our learners before they arrive at college in September to make sure the right support is in place. We will invite you into college to take part in “Getting to Know You Days”. They are a chance for you to spend time with the staff, to meet other people who will be on your course, to make sure you know your way around and check that the support we have planned is right for you.

The “Getting to Know You Days” can be one or two days or up to a year depending on you and your individual needs.  We like to link with college and your parents/carers so we can really understand how we can support you.

We think it is important to get to know and build relationships with parents/carers as well. College is just as new to them as it is for you.

The days you spend with us will be fun and friendly so that you will start looking forward to your future at East Coast College.
