The course is designed to enhance your reading, writing and speaking and listening skills. Having a C/Level 4 or above in English is exactly what employers are looking for so this course will help prepare you for further study and employment.
You will cover:
Reading
- Understanding fiction and non-fiction texts
- Identifying language techniques used in texts for effect
- Evaluating trends in the way we speak, text and write
Writing
- Writing fiction and non-fiction texts for purpose and effect
- Essay-writing
- Improving spelling, punctuation and grammar
Non-examination Assessment: Spoken Language
- Presenting
- Responding to questions and feedback
- Use of Standard English
As well as being able to show off your C grade/Level 4, the writing of your CV and covering letters is likely to vastly improve as you gain knowledge of how to write in different formats and styles. You will learn about using language for specific purposes which will help you persuade employers to take you on!

Requirements
A D-grade/Level 3 in English Language or a Level 1 in Functional English. If your prior attainment is lower than this you will study Functional English to prepare you for GCSE English.
Assessment
There are two written exams in June to assess your skills in: Exploration in Creative Reading and Writing, and Writers’ Viewpoint and Perspectives. The papers contain a mix of short, longer form and extended questions.
Progression
Having a GCSE in English will open more doors for you:
With a suitable Level 3 qualification and your GCSE, you could go to university
You can progress on to level 3 courses in practical or theoretical subjects
You could go on to A Levels
You’ll be immediately more employable
Writing assignments in other subjects will be easier
Finding and applying for work will be easier
You’re more likely to gain an apprenticeship/traineeship
