"We are proud to be working with East Coast College and the carpentry and bricklaying students to provide practical advice and skills and a chance to find out what it is like to work in the construction industry. This year we launched our Target 50 initiative which aims to encourage more females to look at career opportunities in the construction sector and our commitment to bring 50 female apprentices or technical trainees into construction-related roles this year. The initiative forms part of Persimmon’s 50th anniversary celebrations and supports our commitment to building and retaining a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Persimmon Homes has a strong working relationship with East Coast College. The students we have on apprenticeship with us are both hardworking and keen to learn, and are well supported by the college. We feel this is a mutually beneficial arrangement as the students gain valuable experience in the construction industry to support their college course."

Michelle Baker, Managing Director

Our carpentry courses will prepare you for specialised work, such as traditional hand cut roofs, and also provide you with an insight into site management. In practical lessons, you will work through projects to develop your hands-on skills, with all tasks set by the awarding body.

The theory sessions will provide you with the underpinning knowledge of the construction industry needed to apply your skills on site. In our Level 3 course, you will also explore project management and supervisory roles, and develop trade skills in curved joinery projects, double doors and stairs incorporating a turn.

Areas covered include:

  • Complex structural work
  • Dormer windows
  • Double doors
  • Raked and curved moulding
  • Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
  • Why study with us?
    • You will develop your skills using carpentry hand and power tools.
    • You will be taught by highly skilled and qualified staff in our well maintained and stocked workshops.
    • We have outstanding achievement rates and industry connections.

Requirements

You will need to have completed a relevant Level 2 course in order to progress to this Level 3 course.

Assessment

Practical work is assessed in the workshop against awarding body criteria. Theory work is assessed via multiple choice exams, both online and paper-based, at the end of each unit.

Progression

You can progress into an apprenticeship or employment in careers such as a kitchen fitter, general site operative, teacher, wood machinist, joiner, window fitter, site carpenter, formwork or shuttering carpenter.

Former students have gone on to work within the industry or have even set up their own businesses. Many are now helping to train the workforce of the future as they have also taken on apprentices of their own.
