This course will prepare you for specialised work, such as traditional hand cut roofs, and also provide you with an insight into site management. In practical sessions you will through a series of tasks or projects to develop your hands-on skills. All of the tasks that you undertake are set by the awarding body to demonstrate and verify your practical skills. The theory sessions provide you with the underpinning knowledge of the construction industry needed to apply your skills on site.
When you join the course you will undertake an initial assessment, this will allow an individual learning plan to be created which will highlight your strengths and details any areas of need.
The course is broken down into units focusing on specific areas which are then assessed. This will allow us to check your progress before the next module begins.
Areas you may cover include:
- Complex structural work: Hand cut roofs, Dormer windows
- Double doors, raked and curved mouldings
- Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
- Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery: band saws, morticers, thicknessers and circular saws
This course include visits, guest speakers, training opportunities and work experience as standard. We take part in various competitions, including the annual Norfolk and Waveney Building Apprentices’ Competition, to showcase the skills and determination of students.
Requirements
You will need to have completed a relevant level 2 course in order to access this level 3 course.
Assessment
Practical work is assessed in the workshop against awarding body criteria. Theory is assessed via multiple choice exams, both online and paper-based, at the end of each unit.
Progression
After completing this course you may choose to develop your knowledge of the industry further by joining another construction-related programme or find work within the construction industry.
Former students have gone on to work within the industry or have even set up their own businesses. Many are now helping to train the workforce of the future as they have also taken on apprentices of their own.
