The course involves both practical and classroom sessions. You will follow a work-related practical programme which will give you an understanding of the Engineering principles and the practical skills required by the modern tradesperson. You will also be involved in classroom study which will teach you about Engineering as a business and the theory that will underpin your practical knowledge. Subjects studied may include:

  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Working efficiently and effectively in Engineering
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Centre lathe turning
  • Milling
  • Bench fitting

East Coast College has a proven reputation for preparing students for the Engineering Industry. We have a growing number of Engineering Apprentices, strong links with local employers and in addition to the course described, we offer:

  • Teaching in employability skills including: CV Writing, Interview Skills

Three GCSEs at Grade C or above, including maths and English, or an appropriate qualification at Level 1 and an interview. Applicants should demonstrate an aptitude for Engineering craft skills and the interest and ability to cope with the demands of the course.


The course is delivered and assessed at Lowestoft College. A portfolio of job and knowledge assessment is required throughout the course – knowledge elements involve both internal and external exams by EAL.
