The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Make Up Artistry (QCF) is a qualification that has been specifically designed to enable you to learn all aspects of media make up. The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills in media make up to a high level of occupational ability, to enable you to perform your own salon services. It is of the utmost importance that you are a person who takes pride in your appearance and enjoys communicating with people. Enthusiasm, dedication, a mature attitude and competence in the use of the English language are prerequisites of this course.

Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge and understanding of each unit including health and safety for all services. The mandatory section of this qualification will provide you with all the skills and techniques to enable you to provide effective client care, the art of applying make up or photographic make up, character and period make up and the unit that covers creating an image using both hairdressing and media make up skills.

You will be studying a variety of skill units related to hair and make up techniques used for media which include:

  • Promotion of Products & Services
  • Fashion & Photographic
  • Face & Body Art
  • Media Make-up
  • Apply & Instruct on Basic Make-up
  • Skin Camouflage
  • Style & Fit a Postiche

Students from the programme are given opportunities to develop their skills further thanks to visits from industry experts who are keen share their knowledge and talk about this exciting and diverse industry. In 2017 students were able to put their creativity and skills to the test when they were invited to take part in Norwich Fashion Week. The group created a series of looks for models which were inspired by The Tempest by William Shakespeare.

You will have opportunities to participate in College events Including Theatre work, Fashion Photo shoots with Norwich University of Arts and various fashion/portrait photographers. Pleasurewood chills, events with Paintopia and were lucky enough to create a set for the fantastic Norwich Fashion Week – we worked alongside local industry professionals to gain our own set to design and create the hair and makeup.

Requirements

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 2 qualification in beauty therapy and/or a successful skills test and interview. GCSE grade 4 in English, Math’s and Science equivalent. GCSE Art would be an advantage or a keen interest in creative applications. Students need to be creative, great communicators and team players, reliable, with an interest in current and historical fashions of hair and makeup. It is important that students have a mature and professional attitude as the hair and make-up profession is a highly demanding and disciplined one.

Assessment

There is continuous assessment of each unit. You present evidence of competence via practical assessments and production of a personal portfolio of evidence.

Progression

This qualification’s structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a make up artist. It may lead learners directly into employment in the hairdressing, media make up or beauty therapy industries as a stylist/therapist or to work as an independent stylist specialising in hair and media make up. Alternatively, learners may choose to develop their skills further by undertaking Technical Level qualifications at Level 3, including:

Level 3 Award in Bridal Hairstyling (QCF)

Management in Theatrical Special Effects and Media Make Up Level 4

Past students from the department have gone in various different directions. We have a make up artist working for the BBC, salon owners, salon chain owners, mobile therapists, cruise ship therapists, lecturers and people working in spas abroad. A number of former students are now also developing their skills further by studying at University.
