The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Make Up Artistry (QCF) is a qualification that has been specifically designed to enable you to learn all aspects of media make up. The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills in media make up to a high level of occupational ability, to enable you to perform your own salon services. It is of the utmost importance that you are a person who takes pride in your appearance and enjoys communicating with people. Enthusiasm, dedication, a mature attitude and competence in the use of the English language are prerequisites of this course.
Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge and understanding of each unit including health and safety for all services. The mandatory section of this qualification will provide you with all the skills and techniques to enable you to provide effective client care, the art of applying make up or photographic make up, character and period make up and the unit that covers creating an image using both hairdressing and media make up skills.
You will be studying a variety of skill units related to hair and make up techniques used for media which include:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Instruction on Basic Make-Up
- Apply Airbrush Make-Up
- Fashion and Photographic
- Face and Body Art
- Media Make-Up
- Apply Bald Caps and Prosthetic Pieces
- Skin Camouflage
- Style and Dress Hair using a variety of techniques
- Fantasy Hair for Performers
Students from the programme are given opportunities to develop their skills further thanks to visits from industry experts who are keen share their knowledge and talk about this exciting and diverse industry.
You will have opportunities to participate in college events including theatre work and fashion photos. Previous groups have also been able to work for Pleasurewood Chills and events with Paintopia.
Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of Beauty Therapy Level 2 and/or a successful skill test interview.
You will also need to have achieved at least a grade 4 in English, maths and science. GCSE Art would be an advantage or a keen interest in creative applications.
There is continuous assessment of each unit. You present evidence of competence via practical assessments and production of a personal portfolio of evidence.
The course will support you to gain employment as a make-up artist, as the units contained in this qualification cover all the skills and knowledge required for this role.
Working as a make-up artist, you’ll find that there is no defined progression route. The freelance nature of the profession means that individuals may move between trainee make-up assistant, make-up artist, chief/key make-up artist and designer roles, depending on your experience and confidence within a sector.
