This degree offers a stimulating and wide-ranging introduction to English literature and creative writing. You will have the opportunity to study and interpret literature from different historical periods and diverse cultural settings and to develop your writing skills in several genres including fiction; poetry and life writing.
You will develop a wide range of sophisticated reading and writing skills across literary, creative and non-fiction genres, different formats and contexts. You will also study vital and influential works of literature, reading and discussing contemporary works as well as classics in a wide range of genres.
Our creative writing modules will develop your understanding of the techniques used and challenges faced by the writers you study on your English literature modules. They will also help you find inspiration and root your own creative work in the authors and literary traditions you will be studying.
During the first year of study we will provide a strong and challenging foundation to embark upon literary study and the creative career of your choice. Our comprehensive programme includes prose and poetry writing and the study of key aspects of the literary canon in conjunction with published writers and esteemed academics.
In your second year you will work on your independent writing skills, honing your practice in modules focussing on our local areas and the short story. We will explore further the literary canon with modules on Shakespeare and the Gothic delivering an exciting and diverse programme as you build your skills.
The third and final year will see you work to professional briefs, look at 21st writers and genres in depth and collaborate with theatre companies and publishers in order that you forge working relationships in fields you may choose to work in. You will have the option of a literary dissertation or the creative of a creative writing portfolio.
