The Ascentis Level 2 Certificate in Preparing for the Community Interpreting Role is designed for bilingual speakers who want to take the first formal step toward becoming community interpreters. This course builds the essential language, personal, and professional skills needed to progress to higher‑level interpreting qualifications and volunteer or paid roles supporting people across public services.

Throughout the course, students will:

  • Develop the language skills required for future interpreter training, building on their ability to communicate effectively in both English and their other language.
  • Gain a clear understanding of public services in the UK, including the types of settings in which community interpreters work.
  • Explore the role and responsibilities of a community interpreter, including how to access voluntary bilingual work to gain real‑world experience.
  • Strengthen key personal skills, such as assertiveness and active listening, which are essential for effective interpreting.
  • Learn about the skills and language structures required to progress onto Level 3 and higher‑level community interpreting training.
  • Build volunteering experience, with optional placements that help learners gain confidence and insight before moving to more advanced study.

This qualification is ideal for speakers of other languages who wish to help individuals overcome communication barriers in settings such as health, housing, education, justice, and social services. It is also suitable for learners who may not have completed Level 1 Community Interpreting but want a structured pathway into the profession.

The course is internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence, providing a supportive and flexible route toward progression into Level 3 Community Interpreting or related volunteering and work opportunities.
