The NCFE CACHE Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools is an ideal starting point for anyone considering a future career in education. This introductory qualification helps learners develop a clear understanding of what it’s like to work in a school setting, while building the knowledge and confidence needed for further study in teaching and classroom support roles.

Throughout the course, learners will:

  • Explore how schools operate, including the different types of schools, their policies, procedures, and how they support children’s learning.
  • Learn how to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well, including child development stages, safeguarding, equality and inclusion, and creating a supportive learning environment.
  • Develop communication skills, understanding how to interact effectively with children, young people, adults and colleagues within a school community.
  • Gain foundational knowledge of supporting children’s wellbeing and development, preparing them for more advanced qualifications in supporting teaching and learning.

This is a knowledge-only qualification, meaning no school placement is required. It is perfect for those who are new to the sector, returning to education, or exploring whether a teaching assistant or school support role might suit them.

Learners who complete this qualification can progress to Level 2 programmes such as the NCFE Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges or the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning, paving the way toward classroom-based roles.

*Free if under £25,000 a year or in receipt of UC/pension (3 x pay slips or evidence of 3 months of UC is required). If you are not eligible, the course fee is £141.

Requirements

At least Level 1 in English

A basic understanding of computer software e.g Microsoft Word, OneDrive is beneficial
