The Preparing to Work in Retail course is designed for learners who want to build confidence, develop core employability skills, and gain an introduction to working in the retail sector. Using units from the Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Progression, the course provides a flexible and supportive pathway into further learning or entry‑level retail roles.
The Gateway Progression qualifications are built to help learners strengthen essential personal, social, and work‑related skills, while offering sector‑specific tasters—making them a perfect foundation for preparing for retail employment.
Throughout the course, learners will:
- Develop key employability skills such as communication, teamwork, personal presentation, and understanding workplace expectations, all of which are core components within Progression qualifications.
- Explore the retail industry through introductory units that help learners understand what retail work involves, such as customer interaction, stock handling, and the importance of good customer service (aligned with common Level 1 retail taster content such as “Introduction to Retail” and “Introduction to Customer Service”).
- Build confidence in workplace readiness, including time management, following instructions, and problem-solving—skills strongly emphasised within many Gateway employability-focused units.
- Identify personal strengths and career goals, gaining a clearer understanding of retail job roles and the pathways available for progression.
This course is ideal for learners who want to explore retail as a possible career, return to work with new confidence, or build the skills needed to move toward Level 2 retail or employability qualifications. Assessments are typically portfolio‑based, making the course accessible, practical, and supportive for learners at all starting points.
