Course: Grow and Mow
This one year course aims to give you the required skills to move into voluntary work or gain employment or voluntary work in the horticulture and garden maintenance sector. You will study health and safety in a practical environment, maintenance of garden tools and you will learn about looking for and applying for jobs amongst other things.
You will spend two or three sessions per week undertaking work experience placements at separate venues in order to gain a variety of skills. Placements will be at Somerleyton Hall, Ringsfield Hall and Africa Alive.
You will gain a variety of practical skills such as leaf clearing, planting bulbs, seeds and tubers and general garden and park maintenance. You will learn to lift and carry safely and you will gain some basic first aid skills.
The course is enriched by guest speakers, visits, masterclasses and individual work experience which you will seek with the support of a job coach.
There are no entry qualifications required for this course but new students will be required to attend an interview. We will be specifically looking for students who have a positive attitude, enthusiasm to learn and an interest in gardening or grounds work. Learners will have to demonstrate the ability to follow instructions successfully and in a safe way during a taster session.
