Dangerous substances can put people’s safety at risk from fire and explosion. Under DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002) employers and the self-employed have a duty to protect people from risk of fire, explosion and similar events in the workplace. This includes members of the public who may come into contact with work activity.

Dangerous substances are any substances used or present at work that could, if not properly controlled, cause harm to people as a result of a fire or explosion. This includes such things as solvents, paints, varnishes, flammable gases, such as liquid petroleum gas (LPG), dusts from machining and sanding operations and dusts from foodstuffs. CompEx is a national joint training initiative developed and implemented by the Engineering Equipment and Material Users Association (EEMUA) and JTL and is supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Target audience:

CompEx stands for Competence in Explosive Atmospheres. It is the national training and assessment scheme for electrical and instrument craft personnel who work in potentially explosive atmospheres, such as:

On and off-shore oil and gas installations

What qualifications will I achieve?

JTL CompEx Certificate of Core Competence.
The Certificate of Core Competence will only be issued where delegates have satisfactorily completed the unit assessments and have signed the self-declaration of eligibility for training on the JTL registration form to affirm that they are electrically competent.Delegates not meeting the criteria will only be awarded a certificate of attendance.

Expiry Date:

The Certificate of Core Competence is valid for five years and will need to be renewed prior to the expiry date by attendance on the two day CompEx Refresher course. When five years has been exceeded, the delegate will need to attend the full five Day CompEx

Requirements

It is strongly recommended that delegates are able to make off steel wire armoured cable glands when attending modules EX01/2/3/4 and are able to carry out electrical testing for Continuity, Insulation Resistance and Polarity.

All candidates will be expected to record their previous experience and qualifications. Candidates must provide copies of qualifications and photo identification (e.g. Driving Licence, Passport, Identity Card or JIB/SJIB/CSCS Card). All candidates should be appropriately qualified electrotechnical craftspersons, or must be able to provide an employer endorsed letter to substantiate their experience in the relevant discipline. Candidates must sign a declaration to that effect as part of their registration.

Assessment

The assessments for units are both written and practical. Delegates should bring normal PPE for electrical work in a workshop environment, e.g. footwear, overalls and safety glasses. Also, please bring protective gloves if it is your company policy.
