"First Light Festival truly values its partnership with East Coast College. The college is an active part of our steering group and helps us to include the needs and voices of young people in our planning and offer for our multi-arts festival. Volunteering is an important part of what First Light Festival offers and we are delighted that so many students choose to take part in this way. As our work develops, we are also keen to explore workplace opportunities as our programme expands in exciting ways."

If you are passionate about art, design and/or photography including drawing, graphics, and textiles or you want to be an artist, photographer or fashion designer – it all starts here.

Our Level 1 Art and Design qualification is a one year course which offers structure, confidence building and introductory skills in a range of creative areas to help you to progress to Level 2.

You will learn new techniques, materials and processes through a range of practical lessons and tutorials including printmaking, painting, 3D, illustration, ceramics and animation. You will create a portfolio of art and design work for university and work application interviews. You will display your work to the public in end of year exhibitions and take part in real industry set project briefs.

Why study with us:

  • You will have access to dedicated creative spaces with specialist equipment and facilities, including print
tables, sewing machines, painting and drawing spaces, computers with Adobe Creative Cloud software, 3D studio, darkrooms and digital printers.
  • We provide opportunities for work experience with local studios or companies.
  • You will visit local and national galleries and exhibitions and will be offered an international visit to further your knowledge and skills.

Requirements

You will need to have a keen interest in art, design, photography or textiles and have a sketchbook or portfolio of artwork to present at your interview.

Assessment

Work is project based and presented in sketchbooks and a portfolio which is showcased in an end-of-year exhibition. You will be assessed and supported throughout the course with regular reviews, formative and final assessment in each of the course subjects and projects.

Progression

You can progress to study Art and Design Level 2 or an apprenticeship.

Further progression will allow you to study a foundation degree in Professional Photographic Practice, Fashion and Textiles, BA Visual Art or FdA Visual Effects and Post Production through the University of Suffolk at East Coast College or other universities.

Careers include a tattoo artist, art director, architect, fashion designer, industrial designer, interior designer, artist, set designer and graphic designer are just some employment possibilities.
